Get Organised

When getting organized to travel overseas to Ireland (or to any other
country for that matter!) it's important to spend some time planning
for the trip. Doing so often means a better coordinated holiday with
much better use of your time and resources (including monetary

When To Go

The Seasons

Most places in the world have their positives and negatives in terms of

landscape types across the island. A more diverse countryside than that
in Ireland would be most uncommon. So, obviously the weather you are
likely to experience in Ireland is one thing to consider. Don't be put
off by winter though, as there are many positives to being in Ireland
during the winter months.

One thing that is important to the car traveller is that the days are
shorter during winter months and you are unlikely to travel as far as
you might during the lighter periods of the year. So you need to take
that into consideration when planning your trip. Also, some
accommodation providers (eg: Bed and Breakfast operators) will close
during the non-peak periods.

Special Events.

Another factor to consider in relation to timing your trip is the range
of festivals and special events that occur. There are numerous events
throughout the year. Outdoor events, including many of the Gaelic
Sports (Hurling and Football) are seasonal, but many other occasions
(music, galleries and the arts in general are scheduled throughout the
year).

Tipping

Many people have asked us about what the protocols are in relation to
tipping in restaurants and for other services that you might obtain in
Ireland. From my experience, there is not a strong tipping culture in
Ireland. It's not common in Ireland to see, as you might in other
European countries, the term `Service Fee' added to your restaurant or
hotel bill. Mostly there is not a strong culture or expectation that
service providers will receive a tip. Having said all that though, in
my opinion it is always good form to provide some form of gratuity when
receiving good service. If you go to a restaurant in Ireland and the
wait staff give you very good service, then by all means provide them
with a tip. 10-15% of the bill charge would be about right in most
cases.

Tax Refunds

You can often reclaim the sales tax or `Value-added Tax' (VAT) for
goods you've purchased in Ireland. In some countries it can be quite
difficult to arrange this, but in Ireland, there aren't `too many hoops
to jump through'! Just remember to ask for documentation at the time of
purchase. You might be asked to show your passport. Then, all you need
to do is make your claim at the airport or ferry terminal before you
leave the country.

Accommodation

There are lots of options when considering accommodation in Ireland.
There are a range of quality Hotels, Resorts, Motels, Bed and
Breakfasts - right through to caravan parks and camping grounds.
Whether or not to book accommodation in advance is always a question
asked by those looking to travel to Ireland. Of course, it depends upon
